Capitalization of animal species and varieties is a grey area, and no doubt you have already noticed that some aquarists do while others don't. I myself would use ' Blue Ram cichlids '. 'Blue Ram' is capitalized because it is the name of a specific variety, and small-caps 'cichlids' because it is a generic (actually, a family) name.

  • The subsequent reference then would be to 'the Blue Ram' in my tank.
