Capacity

When someone asks his former lecturer for a reference letter, he can say the capacity or the relationship between him and the lecturer is in academic or lecturer. If the referee is his boss, he can simply choose "employer". What if the referee is the head of another department at his institution where he works for? He sometimes works with the department too. Can we call the referee "Senior Colleague?" Thank you.

The choices is YES or NO.
