capacity

Hello.

The historian is an individual being. Like other individuals, he is also a social phenomenon, both the product and the conscious or unconscious spokesman of the society to which he belongs; it is this capacity that he approaches the facts of the historical past.

I've known when capacity means a particular position, it is used with "in", such as, in his capacity. I wonder why it is correct to write "it is this capacity", not "it is in this capacity."

Thank you.
