Can I use both forms in this sentence? Thank you for responding.

Laura hurt her leg and can't/couldn't walk very well.

Laura (has) hurt her leg and can't walk very well.
Laura had hurt her leg and couldn't walk very well. (The past situation is better with the past perfect.)

You can, but they won't mean the same thing.

If Laura hurt her leg and couldn't walk very well 18 years ago, but she walks fine now, you can't possibly use can't in that sentence.
