Can't we use "let" as a passive form?

My grammar book says I cannot use a verb "let" in a passive sentence.

The guard didn't let us enter with a drink. (OK)
We weren't let to enter with a drink. (Not good!)

It recommends me to use "be allowed to V" as an alternative.

We weren't allowed to enter with a drink. (OK).

Is it so?

It's a good book.

Let can be used with a passive infinitive and without an explicit subject.

e.g. a curse:

Let him be damned!
