Can't think of a word

What is the word that describes an individual who is extremely knowledgeable (like a professor), but does not allow himself to become opinionated/dogmatic, so he is always a student. Unlike a student who thinks he knows enough to give in to the possibility of being erroneous.

I like the word cautious, but then caution leans more towards the act of sensing rather than thinking.
