Can't seem to figure this one out

Which one is correct?

a) The sense of realization and happiness people get from these performances and flashes makes them ecstatic.

b) The sense of realization and happiness people get from these performances and flashes make them ecstatic.

In careful writing I prefer "The sense of realization and happiness that people get ...". To me, this feels more polished, even though dropping "that" is permissible in grammar.

I'm not very certain what "flashes" refers to here.
