Can't run any 'longer' or 'farther'

Which is correct?: "I am completely exhausted, I can't run any longer/farther."

I am completely exhausted; I can't run any longer/farther. (Fixed the comma splice.)

Did you put the semicolon there because the two sentences were independent and could stand alone on their own?
