can't get to phone if ...

You can't get to the phone if you're working on something else or there's a distance to the phone ringing.

How do you explain it to the calller later using natrual spoken English? (Caller ID will appear.)

Hi, There's lots of ways to say it. You might simply say something like 'Sorry I couldn't get to the phone before', or 'Sorry I couldn't pick up the phone before, I was busy'. Best wishes, Clive

There's lots of ways to say it. You might simply say something like 'Sorry I couldn't get to the phone before', or 'Sorry I couldn't pick up the phone before, I was busy'.
