Can't find a good title!!

Hi there!

the question is this

Bill drove ____ he could get to the airport on time.

a. faster so (CORRECT)
b so fast that (WRONG)

why is 'a' correct and not 'b'?

i guess it has to do with the meaning/use of 'could', but what's the exact use of 'could' here? possibility, past ability...?

if instead of 'could' we had 'was able to' would 'b' be correct?

Top answer

a is correct. so that he would be able to.. = he could (in order to) so fast would indicate a different outcome (usually negative): He drove so fast that he missed the exit to the airport / He drove so slow that we missed the plane

  • a is correct.
  • so that he would be able to..
  • = he could (in order to) so fast would indicate a different outcome (usually negative): He drove so fast that he missed the exit to the airport / He drove so slow that we missed the plane
