Cannot visualize the phrase

Cannot visualize the phrase ‘in the chimney piece is a fine piece of beautifully figured onyx’.

The passage below is from The Library: A Fragile History by Andrew Pettegree.

There is no evidence that English women lobbied for separate accommodation, but they must have been pleasantly surprised by what they found. The ladies’ room in the library of Hull, Yorkshire, was ‘finished in walnut with comfortable tables and chairs, while in the chimney piece is a fine piece of beautifully figured onyx’.

Here the underlined part is a mystery to me.

In one way, it seems to describe the mantel piece itself, that is, mantel piece itself is made from beautifully decorated onyx stone.

And in another, it seems to say that on the mantel piece there is a statue made from beautifully figured onyx.

What is better or could you show me the exact picture?

Thanks in advance.

A chimney piece is the decorative stuff around a fireplace. It includes the mantel. They often have things embedded in them such as Delft tiles.

  • Since there is only one, I have to guess it's across the top, maybe below the mantel.
