can/could

I'm telling my friend's how my mom reacted to my move to the middle east.

I say: My mom was like, " I fled from Iraq to Europe and made a life in Europe so that I can/could move our whole family to the US, so why are you going back there?"

Shouldn't it be could because it happened in the past?
