Cancel doing something?

Hi! everyone.

Could you tell me what "sending" is in the sentence below?

You have to cancel sending the message.

Is it a gerund acting as a noun?

If I say "You have to cancel the sending of the message": is "the sending" still a noun phrase?

Thanks!
