Can you use a comma in this example?

Can you use a comma in this example? This example is taken from the internet. I believe that a semicolon has to be placed instead of comma in situations like these. My question is: is it optional or mandatory (mandated by grammar)?

"There are two basic varieties of grammar; all languages have some of both kinds, but, depending on the kind of language involved, there's quite a bit of variation in how much of each kind they have." Thanks.

I assume you’re referring to the comma before but . I would use it, though it’s not mandatory. A semicolon wouldn’t be appropriate.

I have no objection to the comma but, when words appear between commas between 'but' and its clause (as in this sentence), I do not use one.

Would it be better if the second comma is removed?

Yes, I was. I can see that now. There is an appositive: "..., depending on the kind of language involved,..." that's why there had to be a comma after "but".
