Can you tell me where to use press and depress?

Hi,

What is the difference between press and depress?
Do you press or depress the button on some cameras?
Do you press or depress the pedal on the bicycle?
Do you pres or depress the gas on the car?

Hi, What is the difference between press and depress? Broadly speaking, press means push depress means push and cause to move down I can depress the start button on my computer. Or, I can press it.

press means push
depress means push and cause to move down

I can depress the start button on my computer. Or, I can press it.

Depress just means press down. If you can say "press down" it makes sense to use depress.

e.g. You depress the clutch pedal before shifting into gear. Is the same as: You press down the clutch pedal before shifting into gear.

No Clive, I have not looked in the Dictionary for the definitions. However, I will do so. I have some previous community college education, and all of my university basics out of the way. While attending college, I became a grammar and punctuation stickler. Before college, I didn't think I could ever write a one page essay, let alone nitpick a 10-15 page essay.
