Can You Solve This Riddle?

A hunter walked one mile south of his camp and saw a bear he chased the bear one mile east then he shot it and brought it north one mile to his camp. It had been destroyed by a second bear. What color was the bear that destroyed his camp

I'll humble myself by admitting I heard this one before. The trick is that the only way he would be back at the base camp is if he started at the North (or South) Pole. And I don't think there are any bears at the South Pole.
