Can you show me some light?

Hi,

Why the sentence 'Description of Items' is wrong while 'Item Descriptions' is correct?

Long back I read somewhere that we could only use 'of' for non-living things. Like

1. Door of the window
Not
1. Window Door
2. Handle of the Bike
Not
2. Bike Handle

As for the living creatures we could use

1. Dog's tail
Not
1. Tail of the Dog

Would you please show me some light on this?

Thanks a lot!

Long back I read somewhere that we could only use 'of' for non-living things Your memory is poor in detail. That is a general guideline, not always followed for forming possessives. It does not apply to your phrase 'description of items'—which is just as correct as 'item description'.

  • 'Bike handle', 'handle of the bike', 'dog's tail', and tail of the dog' are all fine, too.
  • 'Window door' makes as little sense as 'door of the window', however—which have no meaning for me at all.
