Can you say "How did you like it?". Assumed retrospectivness.

I asked this to a English chap who was going back to Kent in a few day's time and I wanted to know his general impressions of his staying in my country. But I believe he did not understand me at first. Is this a very forced type of verbal tense use in English? Should I have added an expression such as "in retrospect"?

Thanks.

'How did you like it' sounds fine to me, Guest, no 'in retrospect' required-- but was your English acquaintance made aware of what 'it' referred to? '

'How did you like my country while you were here?'
