Can you please translate the following passage in simple language? and also give the meaning of GRUDGING FINGERS used in there.

The secrets of nature have been wrested from her grudging fingers by men who, knowing they were mortal, have sought to comprehend the mysteries of the world around them in the hope that knowledge might enable them, if not circumvent death, at least to ameliorate the aspirates of life for themselves and others.

Top answer

The secrets of Mother Nature have been taken from her, even though she has been reluctant to give them up, by men who have hoped to avoid death or at least to reduce the harshness of life. note: I'm almost certain that "aspirates" should be "asperities", which might have been a problem on your end or on theirs.
