Can you please tell me the difference between "want" and "expect"?

The lady said, "We wanted/expected to wait for you to come out and see you safely back into your car. Sometimes rest areas can be an unsafe place for a young lady. We have a daughter almost your age and we wanted to make sure you got safely back on your way".

The two words are unrelated in meaning, and 'expected' does not fit there at all, since we do not expect ourselves to do anything; we expect others to do something.
