In her essay “Crystal Balls”, Canadian journalist Kim Pittaway vehemently explains why she disagrees with the thesis of the book The First Sex: The Natural Talents of Women and How They Are Changing the World (2000) by anthropologist Helen Fisher. After reading the first chapter of Fisher's book, Pittaway felt deeply bothered by Fisher's claim that the future world will be a matriarchy. Pittaway believes that gender does not determine individual capabilities, including leadership capabilities. In order to show that individuals of the future will not think in “gender terms,” Pittaway recounts anecdotes that deal with changing visions of the future and perceptions of gender with the passage of time. Using a personal anecdote of her life plans when she was a teenager as a basis, she contemplates about her own changing vision of the future as a Canadian woman. Pittaway also anecdotally traces the improvement in gender equality from her grandmother's generation to her mother's generation to her own generation and, finally, to her younger friend's generation. She notes the differences in the struggles with and attitudes towards gender between women of different generations. People from her younger friend's generation, Pittaway argues, have reached such a stage of gender equality that they have stopped viewing gender as a bipolar battle for power between men and women. Even if Pittaway admits that gender discrimination still exists, she maintains that today's youngsters are heading towards a future in which gender differences matter much less than “each individual's unique gifts.”
