In his memoir “The King and I”, Quebecois writer Michael Tremblay recollects a time when he dared to try to get into a movie theatre showing an adult-rated movie, “The King and I”, as an underage teenager. His first attempt at getting into the movie theatre failed because he was intimated by the cinema's stern-looking cashier. To console himself after this failure, he decided to buy himself a classical record in a department store. In the store, Tremblay spotted a record of “The King and I”'s soundtrack; he asked the salesgirl to open the record so that me might try it in a listening booth. However, she pretended that she could not understand him because he spoke French. Tremblay was annoyed, but he soon realised that the salesgirl, a Franco-Quebecois herself, was forced by the store's superior staff to discriminate against the French in favour of English. In an act of resistance, Tremblay refused to speak English to salesgirl while they were both being watched by a manager. Tremblay opened the record of “The King and I”'s soundtrack himself. As he listened to the record, a song, “I Whistle a Happy Tune”, inspired him to another act of defiance: to return to the cinema and to be allowed inside by the intimidating cashier and the ticket collector by appearing confident and grown-up. When Tembray was finally able to watch the movie of his choice inside the theatre, he felt that he had transitioned from being a child into being an adult.
