Dear Friends of Monroe, Louisiana I am sure you have seen the news. The United States

wants to send troops to fight in the Vietnam War to help the people of South Vietnam gain their

freedom. I cannot be silent on this topic any longer. I highly disagree with our president. He

wants to send American troops to fight in a useless war. I concur with Martin Luther King

speech. We have our own problems to deal with and should not get involved in a civil war.

I agree with Martin Luther King speech. He says in speech that "America would never

invest the necessary funds or energies in rehabilitation of its poor so long as Vietnam continued

to draw men and skills and money like some demonic, destructive suction tube." He is saying

that now that U.S. wants to fight in the Vietnam War they will not have any money to support

poor people through the Poverty Program. One of his arguments was that he felt that this war

was an enemy to poor people. Also, he says that "It was sending their sons and their brothers and

their husbands to fight and to die in extraordinarily high proportions relative to the rest of the

population. We were taking the young black men who had been crippled by our society and sending

them 8000 miles away to guarantee liberties in Southeast Asia which they had not found in Southwest Georgia and East Harlem." He is saying that the president want young African American men to go fight in the war to guarantee citizens freedom in Southeast Asia and they do not have freedom themselves.

I disagree with President Lyndon Johnson speech. In his speech he says that "Since 1954 every

American President has offered support to the people of South Vietnam. We have helped to build, and we have helped to defend. Thus, over many years, we have made a national pledge to help South Vietnam defend its independence. And I intend to keep that promise." His only defense of fighting in this war is that he wants to keep a promise that was made years ago. He wants U.S soldiers to fight in a war that has nothing to do with them. The South Vietnams need to find a peaceful way to gain their independence and not rely on the U.S. to come and fight their battle for them Also, he says that "We are also there to strengthen world order. Around the globe, from Berlin to Thailand, are people whose well-being rests, in part, on the belief that they can count on us if they are attacked. To leave Vietnam to its fate would shake the confidence of all these people in the value of an American commitment and in the value of America's word." Johnson is wrong. He thinks that by the United States entering the Vietnam this will strengthen world order. It will not. It will make Americans look like a cowards entering into a civil war between two sides of a country. The U.S. should not come to the aid of everyone.

Martin Luther King is correct with his statements. He wants the U.S to focus on their citizens

before they consider helping other countries. He does not want innocent U.S. soldiers being killed. He wants South Vietnam to find a peaceful way to gain their independence instead of fighting.
