Hurricane Katrina was the worst storm that has ever hit Louisiana and one person remembers that so clearly. Derek Amaya, 19, freshman at Louisiana Tech University lived in Metairie Louisiana fifty miles west of New Orleans. The first time Derek heard the about the hurricane news he was on the internet with his dad they figured that it would not hit New Orleans because all of the past storms turned west towards Hawaii or into a tropical depression before it would hit New Orleans.

Friday, two days before the storm was when meteorologist reported that the storm would hit New Orleans that was when Derek's father decided that they were going to evacuate tomorrow. Saturday one day before the storm, Derek's father decided that it was time to evacuate. They evacuated to their aunt's home in Tyler Texas. A normal drive to Tyler Texas would have taken his family six hour to arrive. However, due to all the evacuation it took them 12 hours.

When they arrived Derek's aunt informed them that the levees had broken. His family was concerned because they thought they would lose everything. Sunday Hurricane Katrina made landfall in New Orleans as a category five storm destroying homes, cars, and buildings. Due to the levees breaking it caused major flooding in New Orleans killing hundreds of people, displacing New Orleans residents in new places and causing an estimated of 60 billion dollars of damage to the city of New Orleans.

Derek and his family spent six weeks out of Metairie. Derek was forced to attend a new school. He hated it and he thought that he would never be able to go back home. He figured that his house was destroyed. However, Derek's father returned to Metairie five weeks later to find that their house was not destroyed and only had minor damage.

A friend of Derek's family was not so lucky. His home was destroyed. The hurricane moved it to another spot.

"I am glad that I went through Katrina it made me a better person and to appreciate what I have." Derek said.

Derek grew a New Orleans Saints fan. Due to the hurricane The Saints were forced to play their home games in San Antonio Texas. On September 24, 2006, The New Orleans Saints return to the Superdome for the first time to play against the Atlanta Falcons. Derek was very excited because he felt that New Orleans was not the same with the Saints. The Saints crushed the Atlanta Falcons giving the residents of New Orleans hope that the city was back.
