Losing a Grandmother

When Derek Amaya was 15, he spent most of his time with his grandmother Nadia. He
would go to her house after school, she would make him apple pies, and help him with his
homework. If he was sick, he would go visit his grandmother and she would have a warm plate
of food ready for him. She would make his bed while reading him his favorite book. If he ever
needed help with anything he could count on his grandmother to be there for him. Sept. 7, 2003,
is a day that Derek will never forget. He was sleeping in his room after having a tough day at
school when his dad walked into his room crying and unable to speak. Derek knew that
something was wrong and feared the worst. Derek's father informed him that his grandmother
had died. Nadia died from cancer while his mom was visiting her in a hospice one night. After
hearing the news he immediately begin to cry and became very sad.

"I was upset and depressed because I knew that I would never see her again and did not
get to tell her goodbye,"

After losing his grandmother, Derek was a different person. His school grades suffered.
He would not do his homework and, he quit participating in sports and only wanted to sit in his
room and cry. Also, he did not like being around other people because everyone reminded him of
his beloved grandmother.

"When my grandmother died, I thought that my life was over so I stopped caring about
school and quit talking to other people,"

The day after his grandmother died, Derek did not attend school because his mom
thought that it would be a good idea for him to take some time away from school to grief the loss
of his beloved grandmother. He sat in his room without the lights on and did not speak to
anyone or did he leave his room. He could not get over the fact that he had loss the perfect
grandmother.

Though Derek would never see his grandmother again, he did dream of her the following
night. Nadia was in his room sitting on his bed wearing her favorite blue dress and necklace.
Also, she was wearing a halo and wings. She told him not to worry about her, to take care of
his cousin who is artistic, and to be head of his family. After he woke up and noticed that his
grandmother mother was in the room, he felt safe and became very happy to see her.

"She told me that she loves me too death, and that I should take care of my cousin who is
Artistic,"

After the dream, Derek realized that his grandmother wanted the best for him. So he

stopped crying and begin helping his family take care of his cousin Ryan. Derek would make
sure that Ryan did all of his homework, and would play games with him. Also, Derek begun
doing better in school. He completed every homework assignment, and spent hours studying for
an exam. His grandmother motivated him to continue living his life and not to give up.

"I wanted to do better in school because I knew my grandmother was watching me and I
wanted her to be proud."

Derek's best friend Emily has taken the place of his grandmother. Emily and Derek has
been friends since 7th grade. They met a year after his grandmother died. She was the person he
became close with since his grandmother. Whenever Derek is having trouble dealing with
something always being there for him.

"I am glad that I have Emily in my life. She has helped me get over the death of my
grandmother,"

Derek has continued making his grandmother proud by enrolling in college at Louisiana Tech
University.

"I know that my grandmother is looking down on me from heaven and is smiling."
