Throughout the hard times in her life she continues to write.

Dorothy Willis is 72 years old. She was born in Grambling Louisiana to a very poor family. She is the oldest of three children.

Dorothy always had a passion for writing. While growing up she would write stories and read them aloud to her family and friends. Also, at the age of 10, her father James bought her about black stallion horses. While Willis was in high school she read a book called To Kill a Mockingbird and fell in love with the style.

"The black stallion books inspired me to write. "I love animals and Walter Farley made the adventures so real I rode horses and pretended they were the Black Stallion in the novel", Willis said.

Willis wrote everything time she could. While her sister Brenda Semien was outside playing, Dorothy was inside writing in her journal about what she seen that day.

"I hated that she loved to write because if I would break something in the house. She would write about it and our daddy would whip me. "It also made her have a better relationship with our
momma and daddy," Brenda Semien said.

While growing up Dorothy experienced several hardships in her life. At the age of 13, her father James passed away. While in the on Thanksgiving her father asked her to bring him a turkey leg. The next day she was told that her father refused oxygen after eating and insisted on smoking a cigarette. Several hours later he had a fatal heart attack and died.

"It affected everything in my whole life. He appeared to me in a dream and talked about things yet to happen things I had never heard of like remarriage and divorce. I became fearful and depressed," Willis said.

A year later, Willis suffered another hardship in her life. Her mother had married another man name Bill. While her mother was not home Bill would rape and beat Willis. After several months of the abuse Willis finally got the courage to tell her mother. Her mother did not believe her and called her a liar.

One afternoon, Bill began to sexually assault her on the kitchen floor while her mother was cleaning dishes behind them.

"I screamed and begged her to make him stop. She didn't even turn around, she told me I was a big baby and to shut up. At that moment I knew that I would never be safe from him and she was not going to protect me from him and I believe he knew it too," Willis said.

At the age of 16, Willis ran away from home. After school ended, she got on a bus and went to her grandmother's house. Dorothy told her grandmother about her being raped and she allowed Willis to stay with her.

"It is the only time she ever defied my mother and she did it to protect me," Willis said.

After moving in with her grandmother, Dorothy did not want to write anymore and was very suicidal. She spent most of her time sitting in her room depressed. To encourage Willis to write again, her grandmother told her inspirational stores and wrote her a letter promising Willis that everything was going to be ok and not to give up on her dreams.

In 2008, she began writing articles for an online company called the Bleacher Report. While watching a Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fight with her grandson George she became very interested in MMA and began writing about the fighters.

However in 2010, Dorothy was diagnosed with Multiple sclerosis and began having cognitive problems. She was forced to stop writing articles for the Bleacher Report. She had written over 300 articles and was offered several jobs.

To this day, I continue to write in my diary. I still remember everything that my grandmother told me and I am grateful to God that I still can do some writing at my age," Willis said.
