Here is the biography:
From being a child with goals and ambitions that had led him along a path of journeys with new adventures throughout the way, he now is a man that has achieved his dreams and now possesses wisdom that he passionately distributes to people surrounding him. This is a biography of Anmar Omar whose curiosity led him in learning and developing skill in a wide range of fields and that has led him a long way.
Anmar Omar was born in 1940 in basra, Iraq. He has two siblings, an older sister, Mona and a younger brother called Raja. At the age of 8, his parents divorced and he had to stay with his Dad. However, his parents reconciled shortly after. He attended to three different primary schools which improved his perspective and horizon as he was exposed to different teachers and school cultures. As a primary student, his hobbies and interest had fallen into painting, making sculptures of figures of characters, music and many mechanical works. As he grew up, his goals and ambitions for the future became clearer and sturdier. At the age of 12 he set his goal in becoming a Mechanical engineer and with determination, he placed a piece of paper on his door with “Engineer” written on it. From that following day, he kept on proceeding and keenly facing all the challenged that stood in his way towards that one goal in his mind.
Later on, he then went to King Ghasi Middle school and then to King Faisal High School. His hobbies and interests in High School and Middle school did not differ from when he was in Primary school. He had only developed his skills and understanding of them. He entered many competitions and received many prices, only for wood work though. At the age of 15, his parents once again divorced for the second and last time. The breakup of his parents had affected him greatly. He felt lost and anxious. He and his siblings moved with their Dad to a new apartment in another region of Basrah and because he often missed his mother, he went and visited her very often. He, however, did not let that affect him too deep. He moved on, still following that one goal of his. When he was asked about his childhood, he explained that he had a happy one. However, due to him being the oldest among his siblings, his dad tended to give him more responsibilities that he was supposed to receive and that resulted in him growing up fast. After all, in the end, he did not receive a nice, carefree childhood.
In his teenage years, at that time, they didn’t have a role model and all that wonderful things we have now days and so he didn’t have one. He just wanted to do something decent; he wasn’t trying to become something else. However, his dad was a very large influence on him. He encouraged him a lot in terms of pursuing his hobbies. His dad never discouraged him in trying the things he wanted to try. Nevertheless, he never sat with him and taught him ways to study or any of those sorts of things. But Anmar was curious enough that he had microscope, a chemistry set, and he was practising biology. He didn’t focus on very simple things that he got after but in fact, he was all over the place.
He completed Bacaloria in grade 11 and received a scholarship to study abroad and got sent out of the country to Germany to study. He spent the first six months learning German and the next following six months in technical training in various factories before he was allowed to study at Braunschweig Technical University. It was quite a challenge for him at the first 2 months to communicate with people until later on when he knew enough language skills. From time to time, he would feel lonely and gloomy but since he was living in the place as his other classmates, it helped him overcome those feelings. Overall, It was a different society with different values, but he was young and eager to adapt to the new environment and he learned quickly to value human life, freedom of thought and speech and the value of independence thought. In 1959, he started to study at Braunschweig University. There, in 1961, he met his future wife Inge which he later married in 1963. In the same year, he visited Denmark, Sweden and Austria and later on started working in Holland (Netherland). In 1965, he had his first baby named Frank. AT the same year he finished University with Diplom Ingenieur in Mechanical Engineering. Subsequently, he went back to Iraq. During the period of 1965 and 1968, Anmar was teaching at the Technical College that became later on the University of Technical in Baghdad which joint project with UNESCO. In addition to teaching mechanical Engineering subjects such as Strength material, machine Design, Design of Fluid Machines and Automotive Engineering he established Internal Combustion Lab, Fluid Mechanics Lab and Gas Turbines Lab. Between those times, in 1967, he had a second baby girl named Suzan.
Consequently, he return to Canada in 1968 and performed three jobs. His first job was a designer for flexible packaging Company called Cryovac Inc. In Toronto, Ontario, Canada, he designed bag machines, extrusion equipment and material handling equipment. Following on, his second job was being the Research and Development Engineer for Film extrusion manufacturer – Leco Industries Ltd. Finally, his third job was in Toronto, Ontario, Canada where he developed new plastic film products, new machinery to produce such product and then he later became the Plant Manager of the same company. In 1974, he finished Master of Engineering at McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada and became a consultant to the Plastic Extrusion Industry in Canada and USA after he had Duodenum Peptic ulcer that was cured by antibiotics treatment later in 1989.
During the time between 171 and 1976, Anmar started with boys Scout Canada. He then returned to Iraq with Inge and the kids after he sold his house, car and furniture. From 1976 to 1979, he was teaching at the Institute of Technology in Baghdad and established the new Institute of Technical Instructors and other 24 Technical Institutes throughout Iraq with Japanese Contractors. After that, from 1977 to 1979, he visited Thailand and Japan (2-3 weeks every single year). In the same year, 1979, he returned to Canada and started his own plastic machinery manufacturing company. From 1980 to 2000, he was a professor at Sheridan College in the Mechanical Engineering Department and he was also teaching Assisted Mechanical Design and Computer Controlled Manufacturing. In the 1990s, he visited Spain, Italy, and England and from the year 1997, he began to visit Costa Rica and Mexico yearly. In 1999, he was the volunteer leader for the Boy Scout Canada, working on and off as a leader for over 23 years. In 2000, he retired and in 2001 he visited Syria and then visited Cuba in 2004, Dominican Republic in 2006 and his latest location he visited was New Zealand, Brisbane and Sydney.
Even though he did not live long enough in Australia to make a judgment about the Australian Identity, his thoughts were that we live in a multiculturalism society and that We're allowed our voice, vote and opinion. He also noticed that we’re the beach goers and that we value mate-ship. He also observed that we’re pretty laid back.
As a big believer of the truth and as he values the life of human beings, his hopes for humanity in the future is that people would recognise each other and not as things that could be sold and bough and discarded and other and all the things we usually do with people. His definition of happiness is that happiness is when someone is allowed to do with their heart and desire without hurting anybody else. His main lessons that he learnt from his life is that you could be a grouch and you could be helpful and cheerful because being cheerful makes other people happier and probably your enemies angrier. He also quoted at the interview,” I can make better results with a smile than with a frown.”
This is the story of Anmar Omar. Due to his commitment to his goals, values and belief and due to his enormous efforts to achieve his dreams, he has come a long way and with no doubt, he’s my uncle. Just like how Walt Disney quoted “All our dreams can come true – if we have the courage to pursue them.”
