Can you please help me correct my essay

TOPIC 2: Some people believe that there should be fixed punishment for each type of crime. Others, however, argue that the circumstance of an individual crime, and the motivation for committing it, should always be taken into account when deciding on the punishment.

Discuss both these views and give your opinion.

Punishment is an essential method used to ensure security and safety of people in a society. Some people think that the government should issue a fixed punishment for a specific crime, so that everyone can be punished equally. Whereas others believe the circumstance of an individual crime and motivation for committing it should be taken into consideration when the court decide on the punishment.

Those who support fixed punishments have solid arguments to prove their view. They claim that the fear of definite punishment deter people from doing crime. The number of criminals in the society definitely reduces when people are aware of how they would be punished if they break law. In addition, fixed punishments can help decline the time taken by judges to give their judgment and of course, it will save government’s budge.

Despite of significant advantages of fixed punishments, many people argue that each criminal has a different background; therefore before coming to a final decree the court should carefully consider the situations in which criminals committed crime. Criminal’s motivation ought to be considered in order to determine a fair and adequate punishment.

In general, I support the second view. From my point of view, though everyone should be treated equally, circumstance that led to the crime should be considered before giving punishments. For instance, there was a controversy in Vietnam about the case of two teenager boys accused of robbing some bread whose value was only 45.000VND (just about $2) in 2016. The two boys were announced to have punished with imprisonment up to ten years. Most of Vietnamese people claimed the punishment was too heavy for them. Because the boys were quite hungry at the time they committed crime, and the most important thing in this case is that they didn’t mean to harm the seller. Their future could be destroyed with such heavy sentence.

In conclusion, I personally think a flexible punishment not only can help the authorities maintain justice but also expresses the sympathy of society to people who didn’t commit crime with a inhuman motivation or on purpose.
