Hi, I decided to practise my writing and I wrote an essay. Unfortunately, I don`t have anyone to check it for me. Can I please ask you to correct my mistakes and give me some advice on writing. Thank you in advance.

What Makes a Good Friend?

As Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “The only way to have a friend is to be one”, this quote precisely describes features of the good friend. I believe that it means that what we expect from our friends, we should be an example of. If we do not represent values which are important to us and we expect from the friend, it might be hard for us to find one. We cannot hope to gain friend if we cannot act like a friend.

The friend is the person who, no matter in what circumstances you are, is always there for you. Friendship is essential in our life, we all need a companion, with whom we can share our secrets, thoughts and beliefs. But what is even more important, we can rely on them. However, we must remember that it must be mutual. It is the basic requirement in order to gain and maintain the friendship. The uniqueness of this relation is based on a long time of support. With the time, we became closer and closer to each other. As the bond between friends develops throughout the time, it might be as strong as one of the members of the family. True friends share a deeper understanding, almost like a sibling. It is the person to who you can call in the middle of the night and expect advice.

Like the bond between brother and sister, it cannot disappear in one day, same goes for friendship. The relation which was developed with years is constant because of many obstacles you overcome together. It tightens the relation. Many people believe that friendship cannot last forever. However, there are many exceptions. For instance, marriages who lasted for fifty years and even more. It is known that you cannot marry someone who is not your friend. Also, it dispels the myth, which claims that friendship between man and woman is impossible. The key to the everlasting friendship is compromising and loyalty, never mind what sex you are, and where are you from.

Moreover, nowadays even the distance is not relevant. The technology develops, with it the ways of communicating. These days, the Internet is easily available for anyone, anywhere. As a result, friendship might be maintained through the Internet and social media. We share our “moments”, thanks to that we are up to date with the most important events from the life of our friends. Also, thanks to the Facebook, we can talk without any additional charges, all we need is the Internet connection. We can also spend time together on playing the games and watching movies. It is a great opportunity to check if the relation can last despite the distance between friends. From my experience, I can say that without the Internet, I would not be able to maintain contact with my best friend Kinga. She studies in Olsztyn, and without the Facebook and mobile phones, our contact would be limited.

Taking everything into consideration, in order to keep friends you have to treat friends the same way you would like to be treated. New technology helps us to maintain contact, however real life contact should be in the first place. If we obey those simple rules, you can expect strong and long relation. People come and go but the true friends last a lifetime.
