Can you help me with this sentence?

Hi every one
Please have a look at this sentence:

The solution to the challenge of developing Africa is directly related to African nations adding value to their resources through the adoption of technology.

I don't understand the second line "adding value to their resources". what's the role of -ing here? Can anyone explain the grammar point here and provide any other examples?
