The media should include more stories which report good news. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
It is a controversial issue as to whether mass media should increase its coverage on articles containing positive news or not. From my perspective, I totally agree with this opinion for a number of reasons.
On the one hand, it is reasonable that the dominance of bad news in the headlines is unflavored to some extent. One of the root causes is the adverse impact on the viewers. Indeed, crime scenes are overly reported, giving the audiences undesirable chances to learn about the process of committing a crime which contains pornographic and violent content. Consequently, this possibly raises an individuals' potential to commit the crime, resulting in many other social problems. Moreover, frequent exposure to negative news leaves the audiences with a sense of hopelessness. The most salient example of this is that news soaked with the severity of natural disasters such as global warming or the greenhouse effect might shape more pessimistic audiences' outlook, dampening their effort to prevent such global issues.
On the other hand, there is no denying that the media should extend its coverage of positive articles. Firstly, the positive news can make the audiences feel motivated to do meaningful activities. For example, an article reporting how a group of citizens contributed to environmental preservation by their trivial daily action will give viewers a sense of admiration, having the motivation to do the same. Secondly, broadcasting good news widely also raises citizens' awareness of a healthy society. Undoubtedly, if the news about the benefit when residents coexist harmoniously in a community without crime, the viewers would have grasped the meaning of a law-abiding mindset and gradually stayed away from crime.
In conclusion, due to the aforementioned causes, I completely agree that more good news should be reported on the media for the benefits this would bring.
