Although the normal past tense is 'hung', the word 'hanged' is used in the sense of 'killed'.
ie he purchased a rope and hanged himself,.

This is the correct form in British English. I don't know if it is so for American En

It used to be. It was going to be my correction as well. I'm not sure about current usage, but suggest changing it to "hanged."

My teacher said it should be "Feeling totally hopeless, he purchased a rope and hanged himself".
because hanged and hung means two different things!
