These two writers realize the insufficiency of men, who under the capitalism neglect the beautiful things of world. Thoreau and Melville tell the similar attitude toward the commercial society that commodifies all the beautiful things of the world. Especially in Moby Dick, Melville tells the aggressive men who exploit nature for the purpose of profit. From the different attitudes between sailors in Moby Dick and Thoreau in Walden, both Melville and Thoreau explore the importance of the nature and criticize the commercial society. In Moby Dick, Melville indicates the irrational madness of men who put morality on innocent animals. This novel indirectly exposes men’s absurd attitude to the natural environment.
