TASK 1:
The chart below shows the value of one country’s exports in various categories during 2015 and 2016. The table shows the percentage change in each category of exports in 2016 compared with 2015.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
The table and bar chart compare the international trading value of five different industries of a country in two years: 2015 and 2016.
It is easy to notice that the export value of most categories escalated over the given time period. Besides, petroleum and engineered goods held the lion’s share of revenue amongst other industries.
In terms of petroleum products, export values increased moderately, from slightly over 60 billion dollars to almost 63 billion dollars. Despite growing at a quicker rate – 8.5% - engineering exports also witnessed a similar rise in value.
Income from the remaining industries showed lower records. Profits from exporting gems and jewelry fell sharply by 5.18 %, from around $43 million in 2015 to just over 40 million in 2016. On the other hand, the value of textile exports shot up to over $30 million (an increase of 15.24%) in 2016, whereas the figure for agricultural products remained relatively stable, revolving around $30 million.
TASK 2:
Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
In our modern era, it is unarguable that the Earth is facing a lot of environmental problems such as global warming, ozone layer depletion, air pollution and other ecological issues that threaten the existence of humanity. Not only do I believe that the decline in biodiversity is a catastrophic problem, but I also agree that we need to take into account more environmental concerns.
The vast majority of environmentalists believe that the extinction of various species will inevitably be followed up with devastating damage to the ecology. To start with, the number of plants and insects that are beneficial for agriculture is falling at an alarming rate, which consequently puts crops at risk of being attacked by pests and diseases. Take some bee species as an example, the vanishment of them has lead to a severe decrease in the productivity of farms due to fewer flowers being pollinated. Additionally, the loss of species will create famines in developing countries where wild plants and animals are still the main sources of food.
On the other hand, I admit that there are other problems we need to tackle. One of them being air pollution which is caused by exhaust fumes from means of transportation as well as industrial factories. Such contamination is causing extreme health problems such as lung cancer and respiratory disease. More importantly, climate change caused by global warming results in more intense and frequent weather events than before. For instance, earthquakes in Japan or tropical storms in the Philippines have led to an enormous number of casualties.
By and large, although the extinction of some wildlife species is a critical problem, I believe that we need to consider more major environmental issues.
