It simply is a saying from the ancestors passed down to tell the young that it is of paramount importance to be skillful at only one field. Rather than pouring all our energy trying to be proficient or doing many occupations at once. However, in this ever-changing society where a variety of jobs are available, job-hopping has become a trend among teenagers, as they are quickly changing their workplace only after a short amount of time. This begs a question of whether we should stick to one steady nine-to-five job, or it would be better to change the career path frequently. After taking careful consideration, we believe that we should not change occupations too frequently. Only in certain cases such as having spent enough time at that company or once you have reached your limits at that position in terms of personal and professional growth, that you should consider your switching.
There are a lot of drawbacks that a person who quits their jobs too frequently may face, some of which may even prevent them from climbing further on the career ladder. The first demerit is written on their CVs, this is because many hiring managers see a long list of previous jobs as a sign that the interviewer is unprofessional and unclear about their future goals. A lot of CVs are turned down every year because the applicants do not show their commitment to the company that they applied to. "The cost for training the newcomer is very high, as a direct result, they will not be admitted if they do not stay with the company for more than 3 years", explains Jesse West, an HR professional on HERCAMPUS. "Staying at your job for just a few months suggests that you are not committed to your professional development and that you have a hard time coping with new challenges."
Furthermore, people are more likely to suffer from emotional problems due to a change in their working place. Once they enter a new corporation, they have to adapt to a completely new environment with distinctive office culture and workload. A new job generally requires new job tasks, duties, and expectations from the company, which may seem daunting at first for new people. Those struggles and worries, together with the fear of being left behind when collaborating with new colleagues, who are already familiar with the work pace and other coworkers, can lead to a sharp decrease in productivity. New workplace stress can also have some detrimental effects on the organizations they work for. As research conducted by Corporate Wellness Magazine: "Workplace stress is also linked to higher accident and injury rates and higher turnover rates, both of which increase administrative costs."
On the other hand, switching your workplace at the right time may sometimes boost your income and give your more opportunities to develop professionally. As some dead-end jobs with no promotional opportunities may make you feel stuck behind a desk doing a pedestrian, uninspiring, repetitive task at your current workplace. Moving your companies with better working conditions, a brand new challenge, and a better salary could improve your moods considerably and help you have a better work-life balance. Your productivity and job satisfaction, as a result, could significantly increase. Besides the benefits in terms of earnings and attitudes towards the company, job hoppers could learn a lot about different fields from different people and update their knowledge, making them seasoned workers and more competitive job-seeking candidates for the job.
In conclusion, although there are some unavoidable drawbacks of job shifting, it does not mean you should stick to one job for the rest of your career. Quitting your job and starting over at a new place may give you a fresh start and lots of other merits that can help you in your career path in the long run.
