Some people think that sport teaches children how to compete, while others believe that children learn team work.

It is often argued that children learn to compete in sport while others suggest that sport instills the sense of team work in them. I completely believe that both virtues can be learned by children depending on the type of sport they are in.

First of all, I believe that individual sport gives children the ability to learn how to compete. Many people who engage in individual sport play to win and therefore, try to understand the game. If a child wants to be the best in a particular sport that he is competing in, he will do everything to be better in it. For example, the son of my neighbour, who is an avid fan of tennis, easily excels in it because he studies the ins and outs of the game and practises regularly in order to beat the competition. Thus, it is inherent in children who are eager in an individual sport to master how competition works in the kind of sport they are involved in.

On the other hand, it is obvious that team work is very much important in sport, especially team sports, and children usually work together in order to have a better team. If someone is having a good relationship with his team mates, this person will be a more effective player, benefitting the team as a whole. For example, in basketball, a child will not only think of himself as a solo player but as a part of a group trying to achieve a specific goal. That is why in team sport, children learn how to play along with their team mates.

In conclusion, I feel that children will likely learn how to compete in individual sport while in team sport, they will understand how to play as a team.
