I am writing this letter to support my application to xxxx by outlining my academic and extra-curricular accomplishments together with my career objectives and the motivations to pursue this program. My interest in science and engineering dates back to my years in the secondary school, where my mentors, who have distilled in me the impulse to adore those who can achieve success from apparently impossible situations and look forward to the future with a wise sight, have usually enlightened me that the forthcoming days will find an evolution in computer and robot sciences due to the bombard advances in the field of electronics. They told us that everything will be computerized and robots will do everything. Being influenced by this impression and excelled in math, physics, and chemistry, I have begun to get involved in learning computer programming and my desire to pursue a B.Sc. degree in electronics engineering become urgent and I found that I have become emotionally attached to this discipline. This ambition persisted until I chose to major in electronics engineering in my undergraduate studies and came to regard it as a lifelong career objective to which I would dedicate all my intelligence and energy.
During the first three years of my undergraduate education which I received from Faculty of Electronic Engineering, Menofia University, I derived useful knowledge from a wide variety of foundational courses in electrical and electronic engineering that included Electronic Devices, Electrical and Electronic Circuits, Digital Electronic Circuits, Computer Programming and Architecture, Principles of Microprocessors, Automatic Control Engineering, Electrical Power and Machines, Single-Chip Microcontrollers. In those courses, I achieved excellent marks or the highest scores in the entire grade. Relying on my solid understanding, my well-trained experimental skills and hand-on abilities that I have developed during the study of these courses, I realized that majoring in the field of automatic control is the first logical step which I believe indispensable for my future career development and will benefit me for my whole life.
My theoretical understanding of Control, Mechatronics, and Robotics Engineering came within my studies during the two years in the Department of Industrial Electronics and Control Engineering in which I have exposed to many disciplines embodied in the courses of study including Linear Control Systems, Nonlinear Control Systems, Digital Control Systems, Signal Processing, Modern Control Theory, and Intelligent Control Systems. I was strongly interested in the courses concerning Robotics and Mechatronics to the extent that I have chosen my entire elective courses in this area. These courses include Robotics, Real-Time Control Systems, Servo-Control Lab, Electro-Hydraulic Servo Mechanisms Lab. Modeling of Mechatronic System Components, Computer Numerical Control (CNC).
I came to discover that the classical-based control theories could no longer meet the requirements posed by modern large-scale and complicated robots and other mechatronic systems. Their challenges could only be answered by some database-based, intelligence-oriented theories. Therefore, I purposely self-studied some courses exclusively offered to graduate students-Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, Neural Network, Fuzzy Systems, Robust and Optimal Adaptive Control, Image Processing, statistical analysis… etc. Although the theories incorporated in those courses could by no means work out all the problems in modern control, their effectiveness in improving systems efficiency, made me all the more determined to devote myself to the studies in control theories and applications to robotics. I am very proud to say that my overall undergraduate studies have proved immensely fruitful. In terms of ranking, I have been ranked the second in the department among a total of 362 students with (Excellent with Honor Degree 88.09%).
I have been appointed as a teaching assistant within the same department carrying inside myself a high enthusiasm towards the research in the area of AI and Machine Learning and its applications to nonlinear systems especially, robotics. I have invested my time by getting enrolled in the M.Sc. program in my department in the area of interest with focus on adaptive fuzzy and dynamic fuzzy systems and nonlinear systems cause most of robot links exhibits strong nonlinear dynamics.
Now, I am targeting a top ranking and "world-class" research institute in Control Engineering/Mechatronics/Robotics that implements the state-of-the-art educational systems based on the international academic concepts and offers many research-intense programs and the research environment is impeccable. I hope if I could pursue a degree in the field Computational Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, i.e. statistical analysis, Neural Networks, Fuzzy Systems, Genetic Algorithms, Swarm Intelligence, and Support Vector Machines, and their applications to Advanced Robotics, Signal and Image Processing, and Computer Vision. The application of those important fields of knowledge will ultimately produce important impacts on the technological advances in intelligent mechatronic and robotic systems. Those fields are also the areas in which I am very interested. I am deeply aware that for a person who seeks excellence and who wishes to achieve some innovative research results in the field Mechatronics and Robotics, it is imperative that he or she plunge into an environment which is as challenging and competitive as it is stimulating, promising the realization of one’s ambitions. If admitted, I plan to take advantage of the research resources to their fullest extent and achieve major breakthroughs in research based on what I have so far accomplished. I hope that my prospective studies could solidify my knowledge and bring into full play my latent intellectual capacities. I have experienced too many disappointments and frustrations and what I look for is some truly outstanding and innovative research environment that can lead me to important breakthroughs. My greatest expectation from the prospective degree program is to right place me at the way towards the best award in control community, Richard Bellman Award.
Sincerely Yours, Emad M.Awaad Emad M. Awaad
