Australia’s success is largely due to the cultural diversity of our migrants. Discuss
Australia is a culturally diverse society. Our cultural diversity goes back to our indigenous people who have always had a rich variety of cultures, languages and customs. Even the members of the first fleet came from a variety of ethnic backgrounds. Our diversity has continued to grow ever since, and especially after World War 2, because of large-scale migration from non-English-speaking countries that were running away from war, death, and their countries economic crisis, in the hope of starting a new life. Among the most profound changes in Australia over the past half century has been the evolution from the White Australia Policy to a non-discriminatory immigration policy. Immigrants have played a substantial role in the successful foundation and build up to what Australia is today and there is no denying it. Immigrants have had a positive impact on the economy, our education system, trading links and most obviously has encouraged cultural diversity in other nations around the world, in the aim of creating solidarity between one another and loving one another no matter our ethnic or cultural differences.
Ever since immigrants first arrived here after World War 2, Australia’s economy has never been better. They brought over many of their ideas and ways of doing things and increased and improved the labour force. Australia is ranked 13 in the world on how successful their economy. The first migrants arrived in Western Australia in September 1947. The first wave of migrants came from Britain and Poland. The majority were nominated for trade and industry skills. These people filled in many job spaces in these industries and if not, then they went to other jobs to acquire. As the labour force began to increase with migrant’s, companies could draw on their employees’ knowledge of overseas business networks and practices, their cultural skills, and their understanding of the needs and consumer preferences of groups within the domestic market, to gain a competitive edge. With such a wider variety of skills and ideas, more jobs began to be introduced and more products could be produced and sold to the population, overall improving the economy. However, as the economy was increased because of the diverse amount of skills and ideas being introduced, the education systems changed for the better.
The education system in Australia, changed and improved drastically to help the overseas immigrants adapt to Australia. As a diverse range of immigrants have come to Australia they have helped improve and change the education system, and have brought over many ways of doing things in general. In many ways, the Australian education system has benefited from a flexibility and willingness to learn overseas education systems and education procedures which were brought over when the first waves of immigrants first arrived in Australia. This ability to integrate a variety of different education styles and systems proves to be working successfully in the present, but it also will be in the long run. But immigrants didn’t just change the school education system, they also inspired and taught others new ways of doing things in life. With such a vast amount of cultures, ideas and beliefs, many nations learnt new things off one another, such as ways of creating food, conserving energy, protecting the environment, what to wear and so much more!
International trade is an integral part of the Australian economy, and Australia is heavily reliant on capital inflows. A well-managed and relatively open immigration system has also played a large role in Australia’s success. Since such a large diverse population of immigrants arrived in Australia, many new trading links form different locations began to open. Since Australia accepting practically everyone through their immigration program, many other nations around the world saw this and the vast amount of population from their country in Australia. This provided business opportunities for overseas countries to start trading with Australia to meet the needs and wants of the immigrant population here in Australia. Today, Australia has trading links to practically every country in teg world to further improve the land that is Australia.
The history of multiculturalism in Australia reflects a journey. It has been the journey from British oriented nationalism and the ‘Australian way of life’, through reluctant acceptance of the need to ‘populate or perish’. With this in mind and the diverse range of immigrants from all over the world, Australia has built a significant amount of success around the immigration population. Immigrants have most obviously improved the economy of Australia drastically. The reasons for this is because many new immigrants brought over their skills, ideas and ways of doing things to the Australia workforce, making many jobs easier. With a larger workforce, more goods and services can be produced to cater the needs and wants of the Australia population. Furthermore, with immigrants bringing more variation and ideas to the workforce, this helped improved and add to the education systems. Immigrants thought others way of doing things more productively and efficiently. Additionally, since such a diverse number of immigrants came to Australia, they have opened duo many trading links. The immigrant population opened many business opportunities for both Australia and other nations, which lead to increase of trading links to further improve Australia. Overall, immigrants helped create the building blocks to Australia’s success. We all know, Australia wouldn’t be the nation it is today without them.
