Connections Made:
Text-to Self (T-S)

When I read the part When Bruno was upset about moving out of his favorite house in Berlin, it made me think of a time when I felt upset about moving away from my friends and the home that I am used to.
Another connection I made to this book is when Bruno thought that he was in trouble and was sent away because of his naughtiness. It made me think of a time when I was younger and I was in trouble with my parents. I was worried that my parents were going to send me away and I would never see them again!

The Curious Incident of the dog in the Night-time is a great book to compare to The Boy in the striped pajamas because both characters are trying to understand what is happening in their lives. For example, the main character in “the Curious Incident of the dog in the Night-Time” is a fifteen year old autistic boy who is not only in search for the murder of his favorite dog, but also the answers to aspects of his life that he does not understand and the main character in “The Boy in the striped pajamas” is a nine year old Boy Bruno who is on a quest for understanding why he is moving to Auschwitz and wants to know what is happening in the world.
The difference between the 2 characters is that Jona is Boy who has autism and a disability that is capable of affecting every aspect of life and Bruno is a nine year old boy, like any typical young boy is adventurous and lacks the social understanding to know about what is happening around him.

Text to world (T-W)

The Boy in the Striped Pajamas is a touching story about a nine-year-old boy named Bruno who moves to a desolated area in Auschwitz with his family where he finds nothing to do and no one to play with. He also has no idea what is going on and one day he goes into the woods and sees some barbed wired fence. There is a bald boy in striped pajamas named Shmuel sitting on the other side of the fence; a boy his own age that lives in a parallel, alien existence. Bruno's encounter with the boy in the striped pajamas leads him from innocence to a dawning awareness of the adult world around them as his meetings with Shmuel develop into a friendship with devastating consequences. The story takes place in Berlin, Germany. This story reminds me of

When I read the part when Bruno finds out that he is moving, and he keeps asking his mother all these questions about the new house, I can connect to Bruno because when I moved I also asked all these questions to my parents too. Also, When Bruno’s mom finally said that is enough questions for now, I remember when my mom said that but I was too excited for the new house I couldn't stop asking questions. Bruno is not a fan of his new home; I was not to excited to be moving when it got closer to the time, it was so stressful for me!

When Gretel’s friend treated him like he was small, it reminded me of a time when everyone treated me like I five just because I was the youngest cousin in the family.

In Dickinson's Poems, there is a sense of disconnection with society that the poet experiences due to her isolation and seclusion from the world. Similarly, Bruno, in The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, experiences the same sense of disconnection due to his unsurely over what is right or wrong. He feels out of place and confused throughout the book as a result of his youth as well as his lack of knowledge about the hostile situation in the world. Also, where Dickinson regards her relationship with nature as the most dominant one in her life as depicted in "What mystery pervades a well", Bruno does the same in reference to his relationship with the Jew child, Shmuel. Like nature, Shmuel is an enigmatic character which Bruno does not seem to fully connect throughout the book, largely due to physical barriers such as the electric fence and mental factors like the judgmental character of Lt. Kotler and his father. Lastly, Dickinson realizes her importance and place in the world due to her seclusion.
