Can you correct the following sentences?

There are some mistakes in the sentences below, Can you help me to correct them?
1.It not only pleased them to work with him, but the few pounds thus earned gave them enormous sense of importance.
My proposal primary/huge sense of importance.

2.People are not very keen on the exhibiting side of things in Yorkshire like they are in Snowdonia.
My idea: as they are in Snowdonia

3. Tom Harding left home to take up medicine, but he soon definitely threw up all the idea of becoming a doctor for he desired to go in for law.

My idea: he threw out all the idea...

4.Nowadays, specialization is the rule almost everywhere in secondary education, and where the main subject of teaching is instruction at a higher level, there can be nothing else.

I don't know what is wrong with this sentence.

5.He turned aside from the broad path he was following thaht led straight to the boat-house, and took a smaller track towards the hedge of the lake.

My idea: took a smaller track towards the edge of the lake
