Can you correct for me this sentence?

A person in his lifetime could not experience everything, but by reading a book on particular subject (incorrect) he can gain knowledge over that subject(repeat) in less time.

A person in his lifetime can not experience everything, but by reading a book on a particular subject he can gain knowledge of / about that subject in less time. The phrase ' in less time ' dos not make good sense.
