Can you cook? (please explain structure)

My question is actually about a question. Look at this question.....

Can you cook?

Why isn't it.....Can you cooks?

Is there a rule of thumb to the grammatical structure of this sentence?

How do I explain the structure to my ESL students??? Thank you.
