Can you check this sentence for me please

My teacher said that I am not allowed to start these sentences with "being." I don't trust her.

Being as that the communities in the Southern colonies were so small and so far apart, education wasn’t a priority, nor were cultural traditions, which affected their knowledge.

Being able to freely choose a religion brought in many settlers from all over the world such as the Netherlands, Sweden, and Germany.
