The mass media, including television, radio and newspapers, have great influence in shaping people’s ideas. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? (Model tests for the IELTS)
The mass media had been playing a crucial role in the people's lives since its origin. It helps form opinions on different aspects of life and even can have influence the whole policy of the country.
In the last 50 years the media influence has grown greatly with the advance of technology, first there was the telegraph, then the radio, the newspaper, magazines, television and now the internet.
A common person in the city usually wakes up checks the TV news or newspaper, goes to work, makes a few phone calls and makes his decisions based on the information that he has either from their co -workers, the Internet, TV, friends, family, financial reports published in newspapers or magazines, radio etc. We live in a society that depends on information, communication and doing our daily activities like work, entertainment, health care, education, personal relationships, traveling .
The influence of mass media on our kids, teenagers and society is big. As for me I firmly believe that mass media is even responsible for forming notions about culture, behavior, family, and other values among people. For example, a year ago a new film about young people appeared on TV in Russia. The heroes of these films use slang, swearing, do not respect other peoples and even each other. I have found about this film from my nephew who is 16 years old. He began watching it and after some time while we were speaking he was using rude and offensive language. Moreover, he is sure that there is nothing wrong with it as he took this manner of speaking from TV.
Overall, I believe that mass media is very necessary in our hard world to keep in touch with other countries and inform people about everyday events but we must aware of disadvantages which may have a negative effect too.
