Horrifying Act

By: Anthony

August 23, 2010, we had witnessed a bloody hostage taking in Quirino Grandstand. Senior Inspector Rolando Mendoza was discharged from his post as chief of the Manila Police’s Mobile Patrol Unit in 2008 after he was laid the blame on robbery and extortion or the so-called holdup practice of some police of “placing proof in the ground” and seeking a pay-off from the victims.

Because of the “fast action” and pronouncement done by the Ombudsman, Mendoza was forced to hijack a tourist bus around 10am that captured the attention of every Filipino who was watching the news break. As the bloody hostage taking continues to air over the television many questions abruptly come into my mind. What’s happening to the officer in command? What’s happening to the media?

As Filipino, I know it’s not trouble-free to be on that situation but it was instantly recognizable in the eyes of many people who were able to witness the news broadcast that the policemen and the media were not able to perform their job in the standard approach.

Media had gone under fire over the blow-by-low coverage hostage taking incident. The media contravened the statute as media. Another thing is the PNP. Wasn’t it embarrassing that there were 50 policemen surrounding the bus against one hostage taker. (Squeeze your mind .fifty versus one!) The PNP had so many fall short moments.

They tried to sledgehammer a ‘shatter proof’ window but why do they keep doing that, when it’s already ‘shatterproof’? Wasn’t it stupidity? The horrifying act done during the hostage taking drama showed that our policemen are not ready for this kind of assault and lack of equipment that could have been used to breach the bus.

I, as Filipino was gnashing my teeth when I was watching it because it was “ignominy in my blood”. I know that phenomenon would probably padlock the gate of tourism industry here in Philippines and also discrimination would arise among Filipinos. The economy might tumble! Foreign people might start to have hatred and malafide judgment about Philippines.

With these devastations, I know this horrible incident would serve as a case where we should draw now lessons from so that in the future similar cases. The resulting deaths of hostages will never be repeated and even realize the upshot of every step we make.
