Why can't I use past continous in the 2nd sentence?

superfluous/unnecessary: I know that I can omit the parts of the sentences but are the parts correct/acceptable?

These 3 last sentences were without propositions and the exercise was to correct

Because of the obvious intent of the statement, which is this:

She wanted us to hold on, that is, she wanted us to wait. She said that she would go and call a doctor. "Please wait while I call a doctor," she said.
