Can with general ability

Hello,

My dictinary says that 'can' and 'could' are used when talking about general ability, but in some exercises and in tests they have 'to be able to' as a correct answer.
Eg.,

At five she __was able__________________________ read very well.

Which of them is better to use?

Thanks
