Can we use this?

He gets paid monthly.

Sometimes he earns more.

This sounds really awkward but can we just say this:

He earns more some months.

He gets paid monthly. Sometimes he earns more (money). It's OK. Money is elided because it's understood.

Your version sounds odd to me.

More is a sign of comparison. And in comparison, two sides are compared. If you use your first sentence alone, the speakers expects you to provide further informatin to get what the other side is.
