Essay & Composition Writing

Can we use is and was in different places in a single essay?

I have to check and correct an essay. The person who has written the essay has used past tense tone for the essay. In many places he has used 'was'. Also, in many places he uses 'is'. It is right to write and essay like that or it has to be either 'is' or 'was' everywhere in an essay?

There's no general rule that we must stick to one tense. It would help if you could give some contrasting examples which you are suspicious of. "He was aware that all glory is fleeting," would certainly be alright.

  • "He was aware that all glory is fleeting," would certainly be alright.
  • " If an essay involves narration, it would be less appropriate to switch tenses used in describing actions than it would be in a novel (for example).
