Can we use "era" to talk about ongoing years?

While I was writing an essay, I wanted to compare present days and days in the past. Plus, my opinion is that living in these days is better than in the past. I mean, in my opinion, if we were in the past, we would have to coped with a number of issues that we don't need to deal with these days. I would really appreciate it if someone could let me know whether the phrase "this is the best era" indicates "these days is the best".

Therefore, the received wisdom is that this is the best era to live and I believe that there is some truth in that notion too.
